While touring the Scottish Highlands in August of last year, Gerard Heijdra and his wife, from the Netherlands, suffered a breakdown in their Saab and were forced to pull off the road.
After calling a rescue service to be told they would not be able to help them they were eventually towed to the nearest garage by a mechanic. The news was not good – after an anxious wait of a few days Gerard and his wife were told that the damage to the car was irreparable. After saying goodbye to their beloved Saab the Dutch couple returned home by public transport.
Back home in Holland Gerard called the Saab Owners Club in Scotland to see if anyone would be interested in taking the car for parts. Not long after this Gerard received a call from Euan Headridge – this turned out to be the start of a remarkable rescue operation.
With the help of Perth Cars Euan was able to source a second-hand replacement engine which was ferried to the car in Kyle of Lochalsh three and a half hours’ drive away! At this point it was discovered that the turbo and water-pump would also need replacing. Once again Euan worked with Perth Cars to source the new Original Saab replacement and then drove them to Kyle.
Eventually it was time for some good news – on the 10th November Gerard’s Saab was ready to be collected. For the third and final time Euan travelled to Kyle – this time by train – and collected the Saab and drove it back to Perth Cars.
After a final check at the garage in Perth a pick-up date was arranged with Gerard. But just before setting off for the ferry terminal – another 3 and a half hour drive – Euan’s wife noticed that once open the passenger window wouldn’t close.
This meant another return to Perth to get it fixed, and with the return ferry on the same day, time was of the essence! But with twenty minutes to spare Euan and his wife arrived at the ferry terminal in Gerard’s Saab to meet the happy couple and reunite them with their vehicle.
Unfortunately there was not time for the planned lunch but laden with haggis and other Scottish goodies Gerard and his wife got in their Saab and returned home to Holland.
With the generous help of Saab Owners Club and Perth Cars this much-loved Saab is back on the road and its delighted owner couldn’t be happier:
“Words can’t describe how grateful I was for Euan’s never-ending kindness and for all the time, effort and organisation he devoted to helping a fellow Saab owner in need. The Scottish Saab Owners Club and Euan in particular will forever remain in our hearts!”
Gerard Heijdra, Saab Owner
